Illiteracy among Children

Did you know that there are...

  • 100 million kids not in school worldwide (UNESCO, 2005).
  • 50 million kids not in school in Sub-Saharan Africa!
  • By 2015, 75% of Africa’s youth will be out-of-school.
  • 50% Africans are below 18 years yet over half of the youth and adults don't have basic literacy skills.
  • Over 1/2 have not completed primary or secondary school.
  • Over 1/3 or more of youth and adults in SSA are poor.
  • Only 5% of national budgets worldwide are spent on illiterate populations
  • In one out of four African countries, half of the children enrolled at the end of primary school do not continue to the secondary level in the following year--UNESCO Institute for Statistics.

    • 200 million illiterate adults in Africa.
    • 771 million people over14 yrs old are illiterate worldwide .
    • 60% of the world’s illiterate people are women.
    • 27% of the world’s illiterate are in developing or underdeveloped countries.
